Dalip Singh Rana[3] (born August 27, 1972) better known by his ring name “The Great Khali”, (and previously “Giant Singh” ) is an Indian professional wrestler, actor and former powerlifter who won Mr. India in 1995 and 1996. Like many WWE stars – such as The Rock, aka Dwayne Douglas Johnson – Rana has done a few odd Hollywood roles, including a 2005 film called The Longest Yard.
On the set of another film, called Get Smart, the wrestler surprised Hollywood actor Steve Carell.
“Literally, you shake his hand and you are shaking the inner part of his palm. He could put his hand over your entire head and crush you,” Carell told a reporter later.
Now Rana says he will be “choosy” about doing roles in Bollywood.
Clearly, the wrestler has come a long way since he was breaking rocks on road building projects. In his spare time, he picked up two body building titles.
When he was not working, women in his village of Dhirana would often call him to do what they call heavy duty work: lifting cattle from one barn to another.
WWE scriptwriters racked their brains for an appropriate nickname: Rana first proposed Big Bhima, a character from the Indian epic Mahabharata, but the name did not find much appeal. “Giant Singh” also found no takers.
Someone recommended Lord Shiva but it was rejected on fears that it might offend Indian sentiments.
Rana then proposed the Indian Goddess, Kali, and spoke about her destructive powers.
It clicked instantly. The rest is history.
Rana says he is a vegetarian and abhors alcohol and tobacco. He says he lives a “simple life” with his homemaker wife Harminder Kaur .

Djinn:
In Islamic mythology, the Djinn are fiery spirits, one of which was Iblis. * Sila, Djinn who can appear in any form
* Ifrit, evil spirits.In Middle Eastern magical practice, Djinn are invoked much like the spirits of the Goetia in Western magick.
The word “genie” is a corruption of Djinn. Both ‘Djinn’ and ‘Genius’ probably share a common root. Djinn are said to avoid salt and steel, and to be afraid of the sound of singing.

The Vetala:
In India, tales of vetalas, ghoul-like beings that inhabit corpses, are found in old Sanskrit folklore. A prominent story tells of King Vikramāditya and his nightly quests to capture an elusive vetala. The vetala legends have been compiled in the book Baital Pachisi. The vetala is an undead creature, who like the bat associated with modern day vampirism, hangs upside down on trees found in cremation grounds and cemeteries. (from wiki) They were also called Punyaiama, meaning pure race, as in the Veda. It looks like an old woman, which was deformed with long slits for eyes, discolored skin, poison fingernails and was known for canabalism. It sucks the blood of sleeping, drunken or mad women. It would enter the home by passing a magic thread down the chimney of the home. The Vetala also had the ability to possess corpses. These corpses would have their hands and feet pointing backwards. The Masan:
from India, is said to be usually the ghost of a child that delights in tormenting and killing children. The Masan was able to curse a child that walks in its shadow. It will also follow a woman home should she allow her gown to drag on the ground over his shadow.

The Bhuta:
from Indian Mythology is the soul of a man who died an untimely death, usually violent in nature. This is an ill-intentioned spirit that wandered around at night animating dead bodies and attacking the living like a ghoul. They can also be found in cemeteries or other deserted places, feeding on excretion and intestines. An attack by one of these creatures would usually result in severe sickness or death. The Bhuta also have a problem that they lack shadows and therefore cannot settle on the earth.

Is classified as a vampiric spirit that is usually created due to the death of a man who has no one too properly performs the burial rites at his funeral. When he returns the Gayal reeks his revenge upon the sons of others and upon his own relatives. The threat of a relative returning from the grave is usually enough to ensure that proper burial rite are performed.

Now if he had PEED on her…perhaps we could have been spared the abomination that was her candles-and-flowers tribute to classist circle jerking….

Residents of the Indian capital, Delhi, are reported to be panicking after a series of attacks by mysterious creatures, described as “man-monkeys”.At least one person is said to have died and 35 others have been injured in attacks in recent days or while attempting to flee in panic.Shoot-on-sight orders have been issued to stop these monkey creatures. Police in one Delhi suburb say they have ordered officers to “shoot on sight” to halt the ape-like menace.
Indian newspaper reports described the creature as “short, dark and hairy, with human legs and an ape-like face”. It apparently scratched and attacked people sleeping on the roofs of their homes, during the scorching summer months. According to the Press Trust of India, Delhi police received 29 “distress calls” from the east and north-east parts of the capital on Monday night.
Mystery:
Police are now said to be preparing identification kits of the creatures which allegedly jump down from tall buildings and “sprint long distances in seconds”. “It is indeed intriguing how a human-being can jump down from multi-storey buildings and cover long distances within such a short space of time,” joint commissioner of police, Suresh Roy, said. Zoo officials have also been contacted to help the police investigate the attacks and patrols have been stepped up in areas where the “man-monkeys” are said to be operating. from the bbc.

Apart from the vampire creatures of Desi horror flicks do vampires have a history in Indian folklore? Well, yes…in fact, it is rumoured that some of the vampire myths abounding in the West drew their roots from places like India, Tibet, China and Egypt, as tales were carried back and forth along the silk route, passing through the Mediterranean and spreading stories stories out along the Black sea coast to Greece, the Balkans and of course the Carpathian Mountains, including Hungary and Transylvania.
Here are some Desi Vampire cousins of traditional western vampires…
Kali:
Although the Goddess Kali is clearly not a vampire…she does drink blood, and certainly has a relationship with divine thirst…a nocturnal force of nature, she is also sometimes represented with fangs, and is an avatar of destructive beauty. She wears a wears a garland of corpses or skulls and has four arms. Her temples are located near cremation grounds. She and the goddess Durga battled the demon Raktabija who could reproduce himself from each drop of blood spilled. Kali drank all his blood so none was spilled, thereby winning the battle and killing him. Other names for Kali were Sara or the Black Goddess, by the Gypsies. (excerpt from wikipedia)

This vampire race was short in stature, only standing one and a half meters tall. But, height was not the only thing that had set this species apart; it seems that the Baital was half man and half bat.

The Pacu Pati:
The Pacu Pati is another powerful vampire from India. Deemed as the lord of all beings of mischief. It is seen at night in cemeteries and places of execution. The Pisacha, another name for the Pacu Pati were a race of flesh eaters. They are described as evil ghouls that were created by the vices of humankind. Although its attitude is generally not human friendly, it will cure diseases if enticed to do so. Its favorite pass-time is the consumption of human flesh. Also included in this species is the Mmbyu (death), it was considered the chief of all malevolent creatures. They were vampires of a demonic nature who torment their victims through demonic possessions.

The Rakshasha:
The Rakshasa was a powerful Indian vampire and magician. They like to confuse those around them by appearing either in human form with animal attributes (claws, fangs, slitted eyes, etc.) or as animals with human features (feet, hands, flattened nose, etc.). The animal side is very often a tiger. They are known to eat the victim’s flesh in addition to drinking their blood. The Rakshasa are a shape-shifting species of Hindu mythology that were originally created by the Brahma to protect the sea from those that wanted to steal the elixir of immortality from it. They lived in Lanka (Ceylon) and were ruled by Ravana. Later they became identified as demonic creatures that would often take the shape of a seductive woman and lure men to their deaths. In other accounts these creatures lived in trees and caused vomiting and indigestion to those who strayed to close to its domain. It was said that children would become one of these creatures if they could be induced to eat human brains. The Rakshasa were no longer human but still possessed a physical nature, they loved to prey upon the helpless. Another description of this vampire was a grave wandering, flesh eating, blood-drinking version of elves sporting fangs and drenched in blood. As you can see there are several different versions of this vampire, but they were all accepted as reality by the Hindus who wrote of such a creature in the Vedas. It was possible to destroy this creature by burning, exposing to sunlight or exorcism.
(this is definitely the most bizarre account of Rakshashas I’ve ever come across but maybe folklore took them in another direction…)

The BrahmarākŞhasa/Brahmaparusha:
In northern India, there is the BrahmarākŞhasa or the Brahmaparusha, were a vampire-like creature with a head encircled by intestines and a skull from which it drank blood. This vampire-like creature was a head encircled by intestines and carried a skull from which it drank blood. It was told in folklore that this evil spirit enjoyed eating humans and it would drink the victims blood through the skull it carried, then eat the victims brains. Afterward it would wrap the intestines of the victim around its body to perform a ritual dance.

The Churel or (Churail):
is a vicious vengeful ghost-like vampire found in India. It is normally a woman who died while pregnant during the Diwali festival or while unclean at any time. They are said to have vile appearances, possessing pendulant breasts, thick ugly lips, black tongues and unkept hair. They preyed upon young men, keeping them captive and slowly draining their life forces until they become withered old men. She is said to hate life, and keeps all her greatest spite for her relatives.
The Masani:
Is a female vampire of India; she is said to be the spirit of the burial grounds. The Masani is black in appearance and her hunts are conducted at night, starting as she emerges from a funeral pyre. Anyone passing the burial site will be attacked.
Interestingly enough, Vampires have a different life cycle in Hinduism than they do in Christianity. In Christianity they are understood as a form of demon, that is expected to live forever, that is, until judgement day, when they will then (or if they are killed earlier) be forever more burned in the fires of hell like any other demon. Hinduism is less brutal to its beasties. Apparently you may be able to die and be reincarnated in mortal human flesh. And be warned… it is supposed that leading an unholy or immoral life, sin or suicide, will lead the soul to reincarnate into such evil spirits. Excellent news.

Omar Ali Khan has come out with the first Lollywood Horror Film tribute…and just as I was wistfully hoping that we had some sort of a dark horse Tarantino Desi out there planning out a tribute all the wonderful gore of Lollywood/Bollywood brownsploitation horror…before it disapears into either low budget obscurity or high budget effects that diminish the sleazy queasy quality of the monsters…Omar emerges, riding out of the sunset on the back of this zombie fest….I am dying to see this! It’s called “Zibahkhana,” which means slaughterhouse in Urdu, but the English title is Hell’s Ground. And, like Tarantino’s “Grindhouse”, it’s a film whose title says in word what the film is about; a full on mise en scene of as many classic cult elements of retro Pakistani horror that can fit into a script. The film premiered in the Nat Film Festival in Denmark 2007, has played the “After Dark” Philadelphia Film Festival 2007 and the New York Asian Film Festival 2007. Now Omar and his crew are off to more festivals which you can check out at the official website here:

Lollywood Dracula…ZINDA LAASH

– This movie is only the second horror film (and first vampire film) to be made in Pakistan – “Lollywood’s”(the Pakistani film industry is based in the city of Lahore, therefor the name) own interpretation of Hammer ‘s classic Dracula – it even borrowed a bit of the 1957 Dracula’s musical score.
– The story more or less follows Bram Stoker ‘s novel – to underplay the supernatural and religious elements of Dracula’s identity, the vampire of “Zinda Laash” is given a mad scientist/Dr. Jekyll origin – and this is acknowledged in the film’s credits.
– The film was due to be banned outright (the government found it too “corruptive and evil”) until the producers pleaded with the local censors. The censors relented, but insisted that they would never allow a film of this nature to be released ever again! The movie opened on July 7th, 1967 to big crowds as curiosity levels had reached fever pitch as the film made history as the only local release to be awarded an “Adults Only” certificate. Its got a pretty catchy theme song….and if you click here you can see a clip from the movie where the monster gate crashes a party and starts dancing about….
Khooni Dracula is an utterly atrocious excuse of a movie that perfectly illustrates the level to which Bollywood Horror has plunged over the last decade or so. The movie’s production values are virtually nil with bit comedian Birbal being the only “star” name that anyone would have recognized – they couldn’t even afford an Anil Dhawan or a Navin Nischal or even a Deepak Parashar.To even attempt to explain the “plot” of this disaster of a movie is flattering it considerably, however for the record its basically about an evil fat uncle who rapes and then murders his maid having had a little too much to drink one dark stormy night. The blood that flows from the maids wounds somehow flows into the waiting mouth of Dracula who by coincidence is buried directly below her. This reawakens the ghastly rubber faced Dracula who proceeds to behave rather like a bottled genie in that he is now the slave of his murderous fat master. And so this heinous blimp sends his rubber-faced assassin to murder and rape upon his command. The film is basically a series of cheaply staged set pieces involving some dowdy women disrobing in order to have their beauty baths. Time and again some ugly, squat, plain Jane takes her clothes off – well almost as according to these movies, all desi women bathe with their clothes on – and the audience is treated to numerous shots of underwear and close ups of stretch marked bums and the like. Rubber face Dracula has a penchant for turning up when the nubile young things are disrobed and proceeds to feel them up heartily before plunging his rubber teeth into their leathery skin.
